We Drove an EV 1,400 Miles Across Three States. The Chargers Were the Easy Part.
The great American road trip is supposed to be the electric car's final exam. So we planned one the way a normal family would: no press-fleet favors, no scouting run, and public chargers only. Then we found out what four days on the interstate actually teaches you.
Every EV skeptic has the same trump card. Sure, it's fine around town, they say, but what about the road trip? It's a fair question that almost nobody actually tests honestly. Most long-distance EV reviews are run by people who plan charging stops the way flight crews plan fuel, with spreadsheets and backup options and a professional's tolerance for inconvenience.
We wanted the civilian version. Two adults, a trunk full of luggage, a route we'd never driven, and whatever the in-car planner suggested. If the trip needed a spreadsheet, the trip failed. Those were the rules when we rolled out of Phoenix on a Thursday morning with 96 percent charge and a vague sense of optimism.
Day one settles the range question, mostly
The headline range number survived contact with the interstate better than we expected, and worse than the brochure implies. At a steady 75 with the climate control doing real work, we saw about 82 percent of the rated figure. That's not a scandal. It's just a number you need to know before you trust a leg between chargers, and nobody prints it on the window sticker.
What surprised us more was how quickly the anxiety faded. By the third stop, plugging in felt like what it is: twenty minutes of coffee and email, twice a day. The car preconditioned the battery on approach without being asked, the stalls were open, and the planner's estimates landed within a few percent every single leg.
The infrastructure grew up when nobody was looking
The horror stories that defined EV road trips a few years ago included broken stalls, four-car queues, and apps that wouldn't authenticate. They simply didn't happen to us. Of the eleven chargers we used, ten worked on the first try, and the eleventh worked on the second. The plaza-style stations with a dozen stalls, canopies, and an actual restroom have quietly become the norm along the interstates we drove.

That's the part the skeptics haven't updated on. The question of whether the chargers will be there has largely been answered along major corridors. The honest remaining questions are about the secondary routes, the holiday-weekend surges, and what happens when your plans change at 9 p.m. in a town with one charger behind a grocery store. We hit exactly one of those moments, and it cost us forty minutes and a bag of gas-station popcorn.
What it cost, and what it didn't
The full 1,400 miles cost us $117 in electricity, charging almost entirely at the fast-charger prices that EV owners love to complain about. The same trip in the crossover we'd normally take would have burned roughly $210 in gas. Home charging would have made the gap embarrassing, but road trips are the worst case for EV economics, and the worst case still came out ahead.
The real cost was time, and less of it than we braced for. Adding up every charging stop beyond what a gas car would have needed, the electric penalty for the entire trip came to about ninety minutes. Spread over four days, we noticed it exactly once.
The verdict from the passenger seat
The most telling review came from the co-driver, who has no interest in cars and total interest in whether the trip was pleasant. Her summary after four days: quieter, smoother, and the stops were nicer than gas stations. She then asked why we don't own one, which is the kind of question that ends arguments the spec sheets can't.
